Thomas Edison was the first to achieve in 1877 to record sound. He built a mechanized system called the Phonograph, which was the first practical sound recording and reproduction technology. Technically, the recording industry has advanced dramatically since 1877, and by the twentieth century, it had become an integral part of our life.

Audio engineering, a subfield of audio science, is a profession for persons who enjoy music and want to work in it. Using electronic and mechanical instruments, audio engineers capture sound, record it, copy it, edit it, mix it, and reproduce it. It entails both pre-production and post-production activities to capture even the tiniest sound fluctuations, audio experts employ a range of gear.

The recorded material is polished or "morphed" into sound in the post production process. Other essential components in audio engineering include digital audio workstations, signal processors, and sequencing software.

An audio engineer is someone with experience and training in production and manipulation of sound through mechanical and digital means and are responsible for the final sound heard in music. Audio engineer should possess a good ear for music and sounds. They may sometimes be known as recording engineers and sound engineers, even though the latter are the persons who develop instruments for the audio engineers.

There are certificate, diploma, graduate and post - graduate courses offered by different institutes. Post completion of these courses, students can try for opportunities in audio companies.
