Careers in Biotechnology

Bio-Technology is a research-based science that merges biology and technology. It includes topics such as Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Virology, Chemistry, and Engineering, as well as topics such as Health and Medicine, Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Cropping Systems and Crop Management, Ecology, Cell Biology, Soil Science and Soil Conservation, Bio-statistics, Plant Physiology, Seed Technology, and many others.

Biotechnology is the utilization of living objects in industrial processes, particularly cells and bacteria with a wide range of uses, including the development of numerous medications, vaccines, and diagnostics, as well as increased productivity, improved energy generation, and conservation. Biotechnology's contribution to animal husbandry has resulted in enhanced animal breeding. It also aids in the improvement of seed, pesticide, and fertilizer quality. Pollution control and waste management are aided by environmental biotechnology.

In 1986, central government of India has set up Department of Biotechnology (DBT), helped to give boost to growth of biotechnology in the country. Setting up of “All – India Board of Biotechnology education & Training” under AICTE helped in guiding institutes for courses in Biotechnology. There are many universities and colleges that offer engineering and science graduate and post graduate courses in biotechnology.

This profession has a lot of potential because the demand for biotechnologists is increasing both in India and overseas. It is evolving and growing field, opportunities are opening. Moderna, a biotechnology company has developed vaccine at a very fast pace which implies the role of biotechnology for global health.
