Besant Theosophical College was founded in Madanapalle on July 19, 1915, and was affiliated with Madras University. When Dr. Annie Besant led the agitation, this institution, which had become a center of nationalist activities, was forced to separate from Madras University and become a part of Rabindranath Tagore's newly formed Visva-Bharati University.
