An act of Parliament created the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) in 1972. On August 24, 1972, the Government of India merged the former Marine Products Export Promotion Council into MPEDA. The MPEDA has been tasked with promoting the marine products industry, with a focus on exports from the country. This organization is expected to take all actions necessary to develop and augment the resources needed to promote the exports of "all varieties of fishery products known commercially as shrimp, prawn, lobster, crab, fish, shell-fish, other aquatic animals or plants or part thereof, and any other products which the authority may, by notification in the Gazette of India, declare to be marine products for the purposes of (the) Act."
The Act empowers MPEDA to regulate marine product exports and take all necessary measures to ensure the country's long-term, high-quality seafood exports. MPEDA has been given the authority to prescribe any matters that may be required in the future to protect and increase the country's seafood exports. It is also authorized to inspect marine products and raw materials, establish standards, specifications, and training, and take all necessary steps for exporting seafood.
