Looking back on the eventful history of the Cochin University College of Engineering Kuttanad (CUCEK), Pulincunnu would evoke mixed emotions in a CUCEK fan. It is the only one of its kind in the surrounding area and has the potential to grow beyond the scope of an Engineering College or a University Department. It was established on 21st October 1999 as a University own department outside its main campus, in the picturesque Pulincunnu, Alappuzha district, under the aegis of the CUSAT. It offers four engineering under-graduate courses. On October 25, 1999, it was formally inaugurated in the presence of Syndicate members, including Dr.
The College began its academic activities in rented buildings belonging to the St. Mary's ITC, Pulincunnu and the St. Joseph's HSS, Pulincunnu, thanks to K C Joseph, the then MLA of Kuttanad and the visionary behind it, and Sri. James K. J., the Special Officer of CUCEK. In the first batch, there were 192 students in four B.Tech branches: computer science and engineering, electronics and communication engineering, information technology, and mechanical engineering (1999-2003). The faculty members were delegated from the Centre for Undergraduate Studies in Engineering (CUSAT) and hired on a contract basis. Many senior faculty members' experience and guidance benefited the College's student and junior faculty community.
