NSS College, Nemmara was established by the Nair Service Society (NSS), a great social organization. The foundation stone of the college was laid by Padmabhushan Mannathu Padmanabhan (Late) on February 28, 1966. The College is affiliated to the University of Calicut and it started functioning in 1967 with four batches of pre-degree comprising 80 students each. With the introduction of shift system in 1979-80, the number of batches of pre-degree course rose to six. The College was upgraded in 1971-72 with the commencement of B.Com, BSc –Mathematics, BSc-Chemistry, and BA – History. The college has been taking quantum leaps since its inception and upgradation by introduction of BSc-Physics in 1979-80, BA Economics in 1980-81, MSc Mathematics in 1981-82, BSc Botany in 1981-82, BSc Zoology in 1982-83, M.Com in 1984-85 and BA English in 1994-95. Two innovative courses BBA and BSc Instrumentation were started in the academic years 1997-98 and 1998-99 respectively. M.Sc Chemistry was started in the year 2013-14 and BA Malayalam was started in 2014-15. At Present, the college has 12 UG courses and 3 PG courses and has recorded good results all through the years.
