In the academic year 1999–2000, the Government of Kerala founded the Government Engineering College, Barton Hill. The college has accomplished notably high academic standards in a short period of time since its founding. For the final year B.tech batch as well as all other batches, the college is affiliated with the University of Kerala. Director of Technical Education, Kerala Government, has administrative control over it.
His Highness Sri.Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, the final ruler of the princely State of Travancore, donated the land for the college, which is located on the picturesque hills of Barton Hill. The Barton Hill Girl's High School in Kunnukuzhy, which has since closed, served as the college's first location when it began operations in November 1999.Dr. Shreelekshmi R. is the college's current principal; Prof. G. Jayasankar served as the institution's first principal in the past.
