As the first engineering college in the then-Travancore State, the College of Engineering,Trivandrum was founded in 1939. As the ruler of the then-Travancore state, Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, the college deserves some of the credit for being founded because the first classes were held on July 3, 1939, during his reign. At first, the College was located in the Chief Engineer's former office and bungalow (present PMG Office). The first Principal was a Britishman named Maj. T.H. Matthewman. When the college first opened its doors as a constituent college of Travancore University, it initially accepted 21 students for degree and diploma programs in the civil, mechanical, and electrical branches. The College administration came under the control of the Keralan government with the establishment of the Directorate of Technical Education in the late 1950s.
In 1960, the College was moved to its current 125-acre sprawling location.
