Under Sri. Mannathu Padmanabhan's direction, the Nair Service Society was founded as a group dedicated to the social welfare and advancement of the Nair community. The NSS has grown into a cohesive, well-organized organisation that has adhered to the founder's high ideals and principles at all times. More than 100 schools, numerous arts and science colleges, training colleges, engineering colleges, Homeo Medical College, numerous nursing colleges, Polytechnic College, TTC Schools, Working Women's Hostels, and Technical Institutions are all run by the NSS. As the state has undergone significant social, economic, educational, and political changes, NSS has expanded the benefits of its service beyond communal and religious boundaries.
As the son of middle-class parents, Sri.Mannathu Padmanabhan was born in Perunnai, a village in Changanacherry Taluk of the former state of Travancore, in the latter half of the 19th century. He went on to become the unrivalled leader of the Nair Community, the immortal founder of the Nair Service Society, and the great social reformer. The early years of his life were marked by extreme poverty, suffering, and privation. Following his education, he worked as a teacher before becoming a lawyer. He soon discovered himself being sucked into the maelstrom of political and social movements. He was troubled by the plight of the Nair Community, which was experiencing its own decadence and disintegration due to extravagance, superstitious veneration of outmoded customs, and tradition.
He used his oratory prowess and organisational skills to mobilise the Community, which was mired in a protracted and deep sleep. He conceived, raised, and nurtured the Nair Service Society, which embodied the aspirations and hopes of the community that was in need of a saviour.
