The establishment of Sree Narayana College, Chathannur in the name of the great philosopher, saint, seer, and social reformer, Sree Narayana Guru, was a dream come true for the residents of the area. With the vision of "Liberation through Education," this institution of higher learning, established on 31 August 1981 under the Sree Narayana Trusts, Kollam, has been imparting knowledge to the entire society, bearing in letter and spirit the Guru's lofty ideals. The dream of establishing a group of institutions named after Sree Narayana Guru was realised thanks to the pioneering efforts of the founder manager, late R.Sankar. Through education, this great temple of learning strives to shape a humane, intellectually accomplished, morally awakened, and socially committed fraternity of young men and women.

Prof. K. Udayakumar, a well-known academician, was the college's first Principal. Sree Narayana College, Chathannur, established in 1981, has served the educational and intellectual needs of young men and women from rural south Kollam.

Degree programmes are available in Mathematics, Commerce, Chemistry & Industrial Chemistry, and History. The college offers M.Sc Mathematics and M.Com degrees at the post-graduate level ( Finance stream). Various clubs and study centres exist to encourage and nurture its members' aesthetic and literary talents.

Conscious of its founding obligation, it brings education to the poor and marginalised sections of society, attempting to shape a humane, intellectually progressive, morally awakened, and socially committed group of young men and women.
