Mar Ivanios College, founded in 1949 by Servant of God Archbishop Mar Ivanios, has been a distinguished educational institution. The College is one of the Malankara Syrian Catholic Colleges established and administered by the Major Archdiocese of Trivandrum in accordance with the rights of the minority community guaranteed by the Indian Constitution. For 40 years, Archbishop Benedict Mar Gregorios was the College's first Principal and Patron. His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, Major Archbishop of Trivandrum, is the Patron and Manager of the College, and the administration is carried out through the Managing Council.
The College offers degree programmes in Economics, English (Aided and Unaided), Commerce (Aided and Unaided), Journalism & Mass Communication, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, and Botany & Biotechnology. Under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Knowledge Acquisition and Upgradation of Skilled Human Abilities and Livelihood (DDU-KAUSHAL) Kendra, there are also two Bachelor of Vocation (BVoc) programmes in Software Development and Tourism & Hospitality Management. Post-Graduate Programs include English, Malayalam with Media Studies, Commerce, Tourism & Travel Management (MTTM), Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Zoology.
In order to achieve academic excellence, the Institution has established six Research Centres affiliated with the Departments of English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, and Commerce. Mar Ivanios College was the first institution in Kerala to be accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 1999. In 2004, the College was also the first to be re-assessed and re-accredited by NAAC with a 'A' grade. The NAAC Peer team re-assessed the College in 2011 as part of the Third Cycle of re-accreditation. In 2004, Mar Ivanios College became the first private college affiliated with the University of Kerala to be granted CPE (College with Potential for Excellence) status by the UGC, which was extended in 2014.The University of Kerala granted the college autonomy on the basis of UGC recommendations on June 13, 2014. Mar Ivanios College was ranked 36th among Arts, Science, and Commerce colleges in the 2018 National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
