Iqbal College was established in 1964 as a junior college affiliated with the University of Kerala. It was recognised as the first college owned by the Muslim community in the Thiruvananthapuram district, as well as the first in the Nedumangadu Taluk. It was promoted to a first-year college in 1995. In 1987, the University Grants Commission in New Delhi included the college on the 2(f) and 12(B) lists. In 1995, the college launched its first postgraduate course. Kerala University designated the college as a Commerce Research Center in 2010. Admission is open to all candidates without regard to caste or creed. The college benefits society as a whole, particularly the SC, ST, OBC, and other marginalised communities.
