The Government College, Nedumangad, which is affiliated with Kerala University, is one of the state's premier educational institutions. A long-cherished dream of the people of Nedumangad Taluk was realised when, in response to the request of the popular college sponsoring committee, the Government granted sanction for the establishment of a government college in accordance with G.O.(Rt.)1760/81 H.Edn. dated 26-8-1981. The area served by the college has a high economic potential but is educationally backward. The University approved two batches of P D C, one with world history, Indian history, and Economics as optional subjects and the other with full commerce.
The college began operations on August 28, 1981. On the 28th of August, 1981, Prof. K. Sreedharan Nair took over as principal. On September 16, 1981, the College was inaugurated by the then-chief minister of Kerala, Sri E. K. Nayanar, in a colourful ceremony attended by a large number of students, parents, and members of the public. Classes began on September 22, 1981. Throughout its 36-year history, the college has received awards for sports and cultural activities. The sponsoring committee was successful in acquiring land and constructing buildings for the college at AKKOTTUPARA, about one kilometre from the town centre, thanks to the cooperation of all parties.
The college began operations at its new location in the third term of 1989-90, and the buildings were formally inaugurated by Kerala's chief minister on 14-2-1990.
After a lengthy request from the PTA, students, and faculty, the University sanctioned a B.Com course with 50 students for our college in 1991-92. This altered the college's standards. Following the success of the B.Com classes, the University did not hesitate to sanction other degree classes. A batch of B.A. History was sanctioned in 1991-92, followed by a batch of B.A. Economics the following year. These years saw many changes in curricular and extracurricular activities. N.S.S. and N.C.C. performed admirably. The college makes its mark in arts and sports at the interuniversity level.
This college has been included in the list of colleges prepared under section 2-(f) of the UGC Act, 1956, and is eligible to receive assistance under the rules established under section 12-B of the UGC Act, according to letter No. F-8-7 (07) CPPT dated 25-6-1997.
During the ninth plan period, the UGC approved a batch of B.Com (TPP) students who are highly job-oriented. During this time, three batches of students successfully completed their courses.
Because of the high success rate of graduate courses and the delinking of pre-degree, the government was forced to sanction postgraduate courses. In this College, one batch of M.A. History and one batch of M Com were sanctioned in 1998-1999 and 1999-2000, respectively. This college began offering BSc Physics with Computer Application in 2005.
A well-equipped Physics Lab, Internet Lab, and Computer Lab will provide students with adequate facilities. Students can also use the Edusat facility and a fully computerised library.
Teaching and non-teaching staff who are motivated and dedicated, a well-organized P. T. A., and disciplined students keep the Government College as a high place of education and culture.
The College has been accredited by NAAC with a CGPA of 3.07 on a four-point scale at A Grade for a five-year period, i.e. until 31.03.2026.
