In August 1975, the Government College, Attingal was established as a Junior College. Sri. Vakkom Purushothaman, the then Hon. Minister for Labor, formally inaugurated the institution on August 29, 1975. Prof. H. M. Kassim, who was initially appointed Special Officer, became the College's first Principal. With the establishment of this college, a long-felt need in this area was met.
The college began operations with 160 students divided into two batches of 80 Pre-degree students each. Due to the high demand for admission, the University sanctioned additional batches over time. With the start of the B. Com. Degree course in the academic year 1978-79, the institution was elevated to the status of a first-year college. Economics was introduced at the degree level in 1979-1980. The M.A. Economics programme began in 1993-94. When the government decided to de-link Pre-degree courses from colleges over a three-year period, 1/3 of total Pre-degree batches were reduced in 1997-98 and 2/3 were reduced in 1998-99. There were no Pre-degree admissions from 1999 to 2000.
