The Government College for Women in Thiruvananthapuram is a prestigious institution with a history of approximately 125 years of excellence in the field of women's education and is a pioneering institution in the field of higher education. It is Kerala's sixth oldest college and one of the country's oldest colleges for women. The Royal family of Travancore founded the Sircar Girl's School in 1864, and it was later elevated to the status of a First Grade college and renamed H.H. The Maharaja's College for Women.

The Government College for Women was founded in 1897 with the explicit goal of providing women with a modern, liberal education and thus transforming society and the nation. The college is committed to liberal education ideas but recognises that times have changed and that it must adapt and evolve to keep up with the rapidly changing world. As a result, the College addresses societal needs by providing high-quality non-formal education.
