About

When the Kerala Government announced the need for Junior Colleges in 1964, the CSI Madhya Kerala Diocese saw an opportunity to uphold the great traditions of the Church Missionary Society in the field of education. Bishop M.M. John, then Bishop of the Diocese, made the critical decision to establish a new junior college in the Diocese's southern region. His historic decision was interpreted as a divine intervention to preserve Christian values in a changing world. In honour of the late Rt. Rev. Edward Alfred Livingstone Moore, the fourth Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Travancore-Cochin, he named the college BISHOP MOORE COLLEGE.

Rev. Prof. K.C. Mathew was entrusted with the formidable task of establishing the college by Bishop M. M. John. Achen, along with a dedicated team of 19 teachers and two non-teaching staff, took on the herculean task of constructing this magnificent institution.Rev. Prof. K. C. Mathew, Prof. M. K. Cherian, Prof. Ninan Koshy, Rev. Prof. Itty Mathew, Prof. George. M. Cherian, Prof. Elizabeth Mathew, Prof. Anna Varghese, Prof. V.C. John, Prof. K. George, Prof. K. P. Annamma, Mrs. Joseph Thundiyil, Mrs. Helen David, Rev. The College had a humble beginning, with the first batch of students attending classes in a thatched shed made of coconut leaves. The college is located in Kallumala (mountain of rocks), which was previously a graveyard and has now been transformed into one of Kerala's best learning centres.

The College's founding fathers admitted students without regard for religious affiliation. At the time, the only criteria for hiring were merit and suitability. Everyone's right to conscience was respected. Admissions were given special consideration to the educationally disadvantaged section. The founders hoped that the students within its walls and those who passed through its doors would be patriotic and develop a genuine sense of service to the nation.

Bishop Moore College was founded in Kallumala, Mavelikara in Kerala's Alapuzha District. It was founded in 1964 as a junior college to provide facilities for the University of Kerala's two-year Pre-degree course. The words of St. Mathew in Chapter 5 verse 14 & 15 (You are the light of the world) were all the founders of the College had. A city built on a hill cannot be concealed. They do not light a lamp and place it under a basket, but rather on a lamp stand, and it illuminates everyone in the house) to express their vision for Mavelikara College.
